Questions
Why does a mala have 108 beads?
108 is sacred in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain traditions. Common explanations include the 12 zodiac signs times the 9 planets of Vedic astrology, and the 27 lunar mansions (nakshatras) times their 4 parts. Many malas also have a larger 109th “guru” bead that marks the start and end of a round.
How do you use a mala?
Hold the mala in your right hand. Start at the bead next to the guru bead and move one bead with your thumb for each repetition of your mantra. When you reach the guru bead, you have completed a round; turn around rather than crossing it if you want a second round.
What is japa meditation?
Japa is the repetition of a mantra, aloud, whispered or silently, usually counted on a mala. It is practised in Hindu and Buddhist traditions to steady the mind.
Can I use 27 or 54 beads?
Yes. Wrist malas often have 27 or 54 beads, and four rounds of 27 or two of 54 make 108. You can set the count above.
