What is a Solar Return chart?
A chart cast for the exact moment, each year, when the transiting Sun returns to the precise ecliptic degree it held at your birth. Western astrology reads it as a picture of the year ahead, running from that birthday to the next.
Why does my birth time matter here?
Your natal Sun's exact degree is what this calculator searches for — without a birth time, it's estimated for noon, which can shift the found return moment by up to about half a day. That's close enough for the planets' signs almost always, but the Ascendant is far more sensitive to timing, so treat it as approximate without an exact birth time.
Why does my birth place matter, and does it have to be my current home?
It anchors the location this chart is cast for — a Solar Return's Ascendant and Midheaven depend on where you are standing at the return moment, not just when it happens. Using your birthplace is the traditional default; astrologers who use your current city instead are casting what's called a "relocated" Solar Return, which isn't what this calculator does.
How is this different from my main birth chart?
Your main chart is cast once, for the moment you were born, and describes lifelong patterns. A Solar Return is cast fresh every year, for the moment your Sun completes another full circle, and is read as a forecast for that single year rather than a lifetime.
